Sleep For Kids

Is your child excessively sleepy in the morning or just doesn’t get enough sleep? Well, there are some things that you can do to alleviate the situation. Here are our top 10 tips on how to promote better sleep hygiene in your child.

  1. Establish a fixed bedtime routine for your child. We recommend organizing a series of quiet, calm, and relaxing activities before bedtime.
  2. Try to ensure that your kid goes to sleep and wakes up at approximately the same time every day, even on weekends. Sleeping late during the weekends can make it hard to return to the normal sleep schedule.
  3. Keep your child from using any electronic devices for at least one hour before bedtime and keep these devices away from the bedroom. The bedroom is meant for sleeping and when you engage in other activities such as using your cellphone, laptop, tablet or watch TV while trying to sleep makes it hard for your brain to associate the bed with sleep.
  4. Avoid foods and drinks containing caffeine.
  5. Ensure that your child gets out of the house every day and spends some time in the outdoors engaging in some physical activities.
  6. Make sure that your child’s bedroom is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. If your child is scared of the dark, you can consider investing in a low-level nightlight.
  7. Send your child to bed when they start feeling drowsy. When you allow your child to sleep anywhere else other than their bed, it can cause them to associate sleep with other places besides the bed.
  8. Worry time should be set earlier before bedtime. If your child tends to worry late in the evening, they can have a “worry time” scheduled earlier and be encouraged to think about and discuss their worries with a parent.
  9. Consider relaxation techniques such as engaging in slow deep abdominal breaths, or thinking positive thoughts such as being on a beach to help your child relax.
  10. If your child constantly stares at their clock, you should have it turned away from them.
  11. Invest in a comfortable mattress. Find which Ikea mattress to buy to help your child sleep.
